Care of the Wound
- On the morning after surgery bandages may be replaced as well as any drains that may be present would be removed.
- Wear a well fitting sports type, full cup bra, day and night for at least 6 weeks.
- Avoid getting the wound wet for the first week.
- Wash or bathe around the wound, sponge bath until all the stitches/dressings have been removed.
- You may shower after the sutures are removed/trimmed.
- The remaining sutures will be removed around 12-14 days post operative. The wound/scars need to be taped for 2-3 weeks.
- Do not expect the breast to look normal a week or so after the operation. Swelling and a variable amount of bruising will occur after surgery. Most of the bruising will have disappeared after 3 weeks. The swelling can take as long as 3 months to subside completely.
- The final shape will only be reached 6 months to 1 year after surgery.
- Scars may be pink or even raised in areas for 1 to 2 years after surgery.
- Don’t forget to put skin-friendly adhesive tape on your scars within 6 weeks post-operative.
- Avoid direct sunlight and sun beds to your scars for 1 year, as this causes your scars to remain red and thick.
- DO NOT wear under-wired bra for 8 weeks after surgery
Pain
- You may experience pain or discomfort in the week following surgery.
- If you need to take pain killers, take Panadol or Co-codamol. Take the pain killers as prescribed.
- Avoid Aspirin or pain killers which contain Aspirin as they may aggravate bleeding.
- Adequate antibiotics should be provided and you will need to take these as prescribed. It is important to complete the course.
Activity & exercise
You should not drive for 7 days after surgery unless told otherwise.
Rest at home for the first week after surgery. Limit your upper arm activities during the first week after surgery. Walking as much as possible is allowed.
After 1 week you may resume most normal activities. Except for strenuous exercise. Strenuous activities as tennis, golf, swimming, etc., may be resumed after 7 weeks.
Gradually work yourself back to normal in 3-4 weeks.
You should avoid long haul flights for six weeks post operatively.
Avoid alcohol for the whole week while you are using medication.
Please refrain from smoking pre and post operatively
