Care of the Wound

- Wash or bathe around the wound, sponge bath until all the stitches/dressings have been removed.
- You may shower after the first week/been assessed for wound check.
- The sutures around the nipple will be trimmed around 7 days post operative, at which time dressing may be changed and re-taped.
- Do not expect the breast to look normal a week or so after the operation. Swelling and a variable amount of bruising will occur after surgery. Most of the bruising will have disappeared after 3 weeks. The swelling can take as long as 3 months to subside completely.
- The final shape will only be reached 6 months to 1 year after surgery.
- Scars may be pink or even raised in areas for 1 to 2 years after surgery.
- Don’t forget to put skin-friendly adhesive tape on your scars within 6 weeks post-operative.
- Avoid direct sunlight and sun beds to your scars for 1 year, as this causes your scars to remain red and thick.
- DO NOT wear under-wired bra for 6- 8 weeks after surgery
Pain
- You may experience pain or discomfort in the week following surgery.
- If you need to take pain killers, take Panadol or Co-codamol. Take the pain killers as prescribed.
- Avoid Aspirin or pain killers which contain Aspirin as they may aggravate bleeding.
- Adequate antibiotics should be provided and you will need to take these as prescribed. It is important to complete the course.

- You should not drive for 7 days after surgery unless told otherwise.
- Rest at home for the first week after surgery. Limit your upper arm activities during the first week after surgery. Walking as much as possible is allowed.
- After 1 week you may resume most normal activities. Except for strenuous exercise. Strenuous activities as tennis, golf, swimming, etc., may be resumed after 7 weeks.
- Gradually work yourself back to normal in 3-4 weeks.
- You should avoid long haul flights for six weeks post operatively.
Avoid alcohol for the whole week while you are using medication.
