Care of the Wound
- It is advisable to wear the provided pressure garment for 4-6 weeks day and night (can be removed just 1 hour a day).
- Keep the wounds dry, you may have a quick shower if you need to, but do not wet the wound for too long.
- There may be oozing from the wounds for the first 24 to 48 hours. If necessary, change or apply more dressings to the wound and wear the pressure garment.
- If the dressings become excessively blood stained then change or apply more dressings to the wound.
- If the pressure garment is blood stained you may remove it to wash, dry and put it on again as soon as possible. Please do not tumble dry the compression garment. If you wish to purchase a second garment please contact the nurse.
- Expect swelling and bruising in the first week after surgery, this will improve with time. After 2 weeks post operative, start to massage the treated area with circular motions twice daily.
- The sutures are usually removed around the 7th post operative day and the area is examined.
- Appointments will be made for wound checks on your discharge from hospital or by my secretary.
- Avoid direct sunlight and sun beds to your scars for 1 year post operative, as this causes your scars to remain red and thick.
- Liposuction scars are firm to hard to start with. You are advised to massage these scars once they have healed.
Pain
- You may experience pain or discomfort in the week following surgery.
- If you need to take pain killers, take Panadol or Co-codamol. Take the pain killers as prescribed.
- Avoid Aspirin or pain killers which contain Aspirin, Ibuprofen or vitamin E as they may aggravate bleeding.

- Adequate antibiotics should be provided and you will need to take these as prescribed. It is important to complete the course.
