The following are guidelines but, if you have any queries, please contact us 02083473857.

Care of the Wound

  • It is advisable to wear your support garment provided, day and night for at least 6 weeks after surgery. You are also advised to buy spanks (tight knickers) which you can use under this compression garment to give you support.
  • It is advisable to walk slightly bent at the hips for 7-14 days after the surgery so as not to place any tension on the scars.
  • Sponge bath during this period before removal of sutures and do not wet the wounds at this stage.
  • Sutures are removed around 7th – 14th day post operative and sterristrips dressing reapplied. If the condition of wound permits you can take a shower with the tapes on. You will also be provided with more sterristrips or paper tape to take home after your first visit to nurse. This you can replace yourself. Sometimes the sutures may be dissolvable.
  • You may shower after the sutures are removed completely.
  • Swelling and a variable amount of bruising will occur after the surgery. Most of the bruising will have disappeared by the 3rd week. The swelling can take as long as 4 months to subside completely.
  • The scars will be red and often very thick for some months after the surgery.
  • The process of scar maturation may take as long as 2 years to be completed.
  • Please apply skin-friendly adhesive tape on your scars within 6 weeks post-operative.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and sun beds to your scars for 1 year post operative, as this causes your scars to remain red and thick.

Pain
  • You may experience pain or discomfort in the week following surgery. Most of the pain you will experience is while bending forward, straightening up, rolling from side to side, sitting down or standing up from the chair or bed
  • If you need to take pain killers, take Panadol or Co-codamol. Take the pain killers as prescribed.
  • Avoid Aspirin or anti-inflammatory medication like Ibuprofen or pain killers which contain Aspirin as they may aggravate bleeding.
  • Adequate antibiotics should be provided and you will need to take these as prescribed. It is important to complete the course.
  • Pain may contribute some times to constipation. Take plenty of fruit and salad and drink 2-3 litres of water everyday.

  • Activity & exercise
  • You should not drive for 7-14 days after surgery, unless advised otherwise.
  • You are encouraged to walk small distance every now and then in the beginning. While in the bed, recovering from operation, you should periodically contract and relax your calf muscles. This encourages circulation in your legs and prevents deep vein thrombosis.
  • Please refrain from lifting heavy weight in the first few weeks.
  • Rest at home for the first week after surgery and wear the provided pressure garment day and night to give support and limit swelling.
  • After 10 days you may resume most normal activities, except for strenuous exercise. Strenuous activities as tennis, golf, swimming, etc., may be resumed after 7 weeks.
  • If you are taking any medication prior to operation, do take them as advised by your practioner.
  • You should avoid long haul flights for six weeks post operatively.

  • Avoid alcohol for the whole week while you are using medication.
Please refrain from smoking pre and post operatively
