Care of the Wound
- Bruising around the eyes is usually worse after 24 hours. You may apply ice compresses to the eyelids to control bruising.
- There may be some oozing after the nose packs are removed, dab these with a soft tissue.
- Bleeding from the nose is uncommon, but if it occurs remain calm and apply cold compresses to the nose.
- In the week after surgery, avoid hot food, hot fluids, hot baths and alcohol. Ice, cold fluids, ice cream is recommended.
- The nose splint is usually removed around the 7th post operative day.
- After the splint is removed you may clean just inside each nostril with cotton buds soaked with water or salt water, advice will be given on nasal irrigation.
- Glasses may rest on the splint, or be taped to your forehead after the splint is removed.
- DO NOT allow glasses to rest directly on the nose for 6 weeks, especially footsteps.
- Contact lenses can easily be inserted after a few days.
- Avoid direct sunlight on the nose for 8 weeks.
- Remember to try not to knock your nose.
- DO NOT blow your nose for at least 6 weeks and if you sneeze try to sneeze through your mouth.
- Do not bend unnecessarily forward.
- Sleep in a propped up position with two or three pillows
- Avoid direct sunlight and sun beds to your scars for 1 year post operative, as this causes your scars to remain red and thick.
Pain
- You may experience pain or discomfort in the week following surgery.
- If you need to take pain killers, take Panadol or Co-codamol. Take the pain killers as prescribed.
- Avoid Aspirin or pain killers which contain Aspirin as they may aggravate bleeding.
- Adequate antibiotics should be provided and you will need to take these as prescribed. It is important to complete the course.
Sleep
- Rest for the first 4 days.
- Keep your head propped up
- Do not bend unnecessarily forward
Activity & exercise
- Avoid contact sports for 6 months.
- After 1 week you may resume most normal activities. Except for strenuous exercise. Strenuous activities as tennis, golf, swimming, etc., may be resumed after 6 weeks.
- You should avoid long haul flights for six weeks post operatively.
Avoid alcohol for the whole week while you are using medication.
Please refrain from smoking pre and post operatively
